Bob Miller
Biography
Bob Miller currently serves as Chairman Emeritus of Albertsons LLC, a North American grocery company comprised of over 2,200 ACME, Albertsons, Carrs, Jewel-Osco, Pavilions, Safeway, Shaw’s, Star Market, United Supermarket and Vons stores.
Miller began his career at Albertson’s Inc. as a bottle sorter, and over the next 30 years worked his way up from Store Manager to Executive Vice President. He left to join Fred Meyer where he served as Chairman and CEO from 1991 – 1999, culminating in their merger with the Kroger Company, where he was appointed Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer following the transaction close.
In December 1999, Miller was hired as Chairman and CEO of Rite Aid Corporation, the country’s third largest drugstore chain, where over the next three and a half years he led the successful turnaround of the nearly-bankrupt company. He continued to serve as Chairman of Rite Aid until June 2007 and as a Director until 2011. Concurrently, Miller was Chairman of the Board of Wild Oats Markets based in Boulder, Colorado from December 2004 through 2006.
In 2006, Miller returned to lead Albertson’s LLC as CEO following the divestiture of Albertson’s, Inc.’s assets. In 2013, the Company, which had 192 stores total, acquired 877 stores from SUPERVALU, and later that year, added 51 stores from Lubbock-based United Supermarkets. In January 2015, AB Acquisition, backed by a Cerberus-led investor group, completed a merger with Safeway, doubling the size of the company. The Albertsons-Safeway merger created a diversified network of more than 2,200 grocery stores, over 1,600 pharmacies, 35 distribution centers, 19 manufacturing plants, and more than 250,000 employees across the country.
Miller currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Jim Pattison Group. His accolades include an Honorary Doctorate degree from Portland State University in 1998, the Horatio Alger Award in 2012, an honor given to individuals whose courage and determination allow them to succeed in their field despite significant early life challenges and recognizes their strong commitment to philanthropy, the first Boise State Champion of Commerce Award in 2014, The Shelby Report Food Industry Hall of Fame in 2018. Also, in 2018, Bob was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Boise State University.
A native of Louisville, Mississippi, he attended Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California and the Executive Management Program at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Bob is married with three sons.
